2D Emphasis
My current project I’m working on is
illustrating and writing a children’s book. I want it to be about the monsters
we used to fear as children. These would include the basement monster, the ones
under our bed, the one in our closet, the toilet monster, and the one who lives
in the attic. I want to end the story by having the main character, overcome
his fear with the help of his family.
The main inspiration for the book it
self, is our first child. My wife and I recently found out we are expecting,
and it happens to be a boy! This has made me reflect back on when I was a child
and the things I feared and how I was able to overcome them. Once we pick out a
name for our child that will also be the name of the main character.
I have three main influences helping
me with the illustrations for this book. H.R. Gieger, Brom and my own art. I
chose Gieger, because of his biomorphic forms, which acts as a great reference
for the monsters shapes and sizes. Brom also is a great reference for
creatures, and his use of color is helpful too. The last influence was the
reactions/feedback I received form the first monster picture I did for a
project in illustration last semester. We had to illustrate a picture showing
perspective so my picture was of a kid hiding under his bed while the closet
monster was coming out looking for him.
My work has always followed more of
a darker subject matter; I want to bring a little more hope back into the piece,
a happier side to life. I want this book to be more of a graphic novel, more
illustrations than words, and aimed at an audience a little older than the
typical children’s book (8-10 years). One other idea planned for this book
is to “hide” one of my dead teddies in every picture. Dead teddies are a line
of mine that have different teddy bears dying, but without the graphicness of
blood, it’s stuffing.
